How much does an stupid or dissapointing ending affect your score of an anime?

For example, on my list, I would have ranked ERASED higher if the ending wasn't so predictable and cheesy. Like wow, it seemed like a really mind bending and unpredictable story but it decided to go full cheese at the end, even had to throw in some friendship babble for shits. Is it not creepy that the moral of a story about a 29 year old playing with elementary school kids in a child's body is friendshwip? Given the age of the main character they should have ended with musings on the more adult themes explored in the series.

Another is Monster, would have been a masterpiece if the author would have followed through with Johan's ascent to power. The ending felt like a lazy excuse to end a story prematurely, it didn't feel natural at all. Very anti-climactic. I heard his other stories have similar bogus conclusions.

Wasn't a huge fan of the end of FMA brotherhood but it was still great.

Death Note's end was mediocre.

Ghost in the shell stand alone 2nd gig was a boring ending.

Parasyte had a really silly message at the end, it earns the label of pretentious.

Etc

How do these affect your scores

It affects my final score greatly because it leaves a lasting impression in me. It's like everything they tried to build from the beginning is wasted because the last thing you remember is a lackluster closure to the series. However, that does not mean I disregard the show's other merits. It's all about the journey, not the destination but sometimes when the destination isn't as great as you thought it would be the journey all seemed worthless and a waste of time.

I rated Expelled from Paradise a 6 instead of a 4 that I originally planned despite it's bad first half, boring characters, and predictable plot twist because of the ending.

I guess Oreimo's ending would only lower the score by one mark for me. The series wasn't so great anyways.

Depends on how good the anime has been before... A good anime would be able to overcome even a crappy ending.
“Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth. But the world isn't perfect, and the law is incomplete..." -Alphonse Elric

"Then and now, what I protect has never changed!" -Sakata Gintoki

I'll take anything like The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. Anything as good as that.

Depends on how much bullshit there is but an anticlimactic ending is not bad.

I disagree because Johan wasn't the main focus of the story.

In regards to Erased you should probably read the manga, i was excited when the anime came out after reading the manga but when i saw that there would only be one season i didn't think they could pull it off and they didn't. The manga obviously goes more in depth and explored some of the themes you are talking about.

It depends on how bad the ending is and how much the anime depends on it. Mystery, thriller and psychological anime are ones which I feel have a far higher dependence on their ending than other types of anime. If you spend x amount of episodes building up the story, drawing you deeper into the world and pondering who the culprit is and how the ending will pan out, if the ending turns out to be really shit then it's going to feel like a huge let down.
It's no great secret that the last 3 episodes of Boku Dake caused it to drop right out of the top anime, going from #5 to its current position of around 32 or so. When the plot is built up, the webs of information, revelations and characters branch out and become more complex, when the possibilities of how the ending might turn out increase in number, having a terrible ending is going to make the journey up until the ending feel like a load of wasted potential. So for any series that builds up towards the ending, it makes sense for those to have the biggest requirement for the ending to be of high quality, else it will make the story fall apart and having the worst lasting impression.

I'd say that for most other genres, the importance of the ending falls down somewhat; it's definitely not paramount to have an amazing last episode for an episodic comedy or a slice of life series. I thought that the last episode of Cowboy Bebop was a very powerful one, but to be honest the series would have been decent enough in its own right had the last episode just been another random one that followed the steps that all the others preceding it had. In this case, whilst the last episode certainly improved my perception of the anime, it wouldn't have suffered as a whole had the ending been different.

There're also those series that had a bad ending but were already going down the shitter before the ending even happened. Charlotte's last episode was truly abysmal, and was a prime of example of why you should never rush a series, but it had started to fall apart by the 8th episode or so, and thus the ending really didn't affect my opinion that much because it had already deteriorated at that point. It acted as the final nail in the coffin rather than being the sole catalyst in ruining my opinion of the anime.

So really, it just boils down to whether the series is leaning on a solid ending or not. A great ending is always appreciated, but not always required. I just finished Saekano and whilst the ending sort of left the story in the air, I'm not really that bothered by it because it seems more that the project they were working on acted as a means to bring all the characters together rather than it being the goal of the series. I was just enjoying the antics that the characters got up to each episode, so leaving the story and project unfinished doesn't particularly concern me in any way.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

Maybe by 1 rating lower or 2 if I'm REALLY pissed about it (happened maybe once or twice)
but a good one could easily raise the score too even if I didn't like the rest of the show much

1 or 2 points max, I hate when it happens, but if I liked the rest of the anime I will keep considering that it was worth the watch (an 8 score for the way I rate).

I only remember two cases happening to me for now tho.

ERASED 10 > 8

Akame ga Kill 9 > 8

It's rare for me to decrease a score for more than 1 point cuz of bad endings...
Boku Dake was going to be an 8, dropped to 7 cuz of the 2 last episodes, but the rest still deserved an 8 for me...

Well, I certainly disagree with your picks about Monster and Ghost in the Shell: SAC. I thought the ending to Monster was perfect (the Ruhenheim section was one of the best parts of the show), and the SAC season 1 ending was equally awesome. I didn't like the very last scene for 2nd GIG though.

The endings do certainly affect my score of the show. The ending and pretty much the whole of the second part for Welcome to the NHK was relatively disagreeable, but I still gave it an 6/10 because of it's brilliant first 14 episodes. However, a bad ending episode on its own doesn't affect my score that much; because after all, it's the journey not the destination that counts. That being said, I do prefer a show to have a bad first half but a great second half (eg. JoJo) than the other way around.

Very little. (I haven't transferred my list from elsewhere)

But I generally just focus on how good the show was from start to finish. I've came across some lackluster and sometimes abrupt endings (with no new seasons in sight) and have been disappointed but I tend to just focus on the story at hand.

Depending on the situation I might dock it slightly but not to the point I disregard the entire series just because of the last 10 minutes or so.

Generally if I can't decide between two scores I'll give it the higher one if it has a good ending.
Sometimes an ending is so good (Code Geass R2) or so bad (Berserk) That I rate the whole series higher or lower because of it but that's rare.
Never forget! Don't believe in you who believes in me, don't believe in me who believes in you, believe in you...who believes in yourself!

You pretty much hit the nail on the head (especially with GitS and Death Note, though some spoiler tags wouldn't hurt).
I usually have a general score in mind before finishing the show and the ending usually swifts that number by 1 or 2 (it has to be a really crappy -or awesome- ending to go further than that, though there have been cases).
But yeah, anime writers, if you could write a compelling ending that ties most loose ends, reveals the faith of your characters and hints at the change (or lack of) happening in the world you've created, that would be great.

If they are really crappy (Soul Eater, Gangsta...), very much. That's the reason why some animes received a very lower score from me of what I thought they deserved at the beginning.

I've usually already worked out the rating for the show before the last episode so it is rare that the ending changes how good I though the show was. The only time I have changed my rating because of the final episode was Gurren Lagann (8 to 9).

Many of the shows I watch/enjoy are episodic so not by much really.

One of the only shows I've watched that I felt like it didn't have a "proper" ending was Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei S1.

Worst case scenario it might pull my score down by 2 points.
It also depends on where it got derailed though but just the last two episodes alone aren't enough to pull down a great show by much..

Anime with bad endings should just die and turn to cinders. If its just some plot holes that make you want another season its fine but in some anime the ending just makes you regret watching it in the first place.

It affects very much. Some shows can really make your jaw drop with its surprisingly terrible ending. I don't want to say which anime because the endings I hate can be something that other people can like.
At least justify your opinions instead of just saying "it's my opinion". It would've been more polite.

As Glass Reflection Arakada would say, "The ending is paramount!"

But, to argue that. It's like when people talk about the animation mistakes that occurred in Gurren Lagann or Neon Genesis Evangelion's ending episodes. Because of one or two episodes mid way through the series, does that take away from the even greater episodes, that there are four times more of. So, the ending episode is one (two or three) episodes in a series. So, no. An ending can be a little more than unsatisfying, but the way there is much more important, in my opinion.

Depends on the genre but it can affect it quite a lot if it's a plot-centric show

Think I had Kyoukai no Kanata as a 7 or an 8 up until the last minute of the last episode. Then the final scene pissed me off so much I gave it a 3 instead. Sooo yeah it happens

I barely care. Anime as a medium revolves around shitty cop-out endings a la 'go read the source if you want to know what's really going on, asshole'

As I see it even a decent ending is a rare bonus in the anime medium. I love it when that happens. But in general I don't expect it to and so I'm never really disappointed by bad or mediocre endings and don't lower my score that much if at all. As long as I enjoyed the shit out of 85-90% of the episodes (this is for a 1-cour show) the one episode that wasn't that great won't make me downrate the whole show, even if it's the final episode. One episode is just one episode after all-
I probably regret this post by now.

Quite a bit. When a show starts promisingly and ends with a disappointing conclusion, usually with a dwindling second half, it leaves me pretty unsatisfied. To boot, if the other elements dwindled as well (animation wise, for example, the art starts to look crappy) during the series second half, I'll also be inclined to knock my score down. I've downgraded a few shows from an 8-9 to a 5-6 based on those elements.

Since the ending is what concludes the series, endings are what make or break an anime for me. If done well, I might give the anime a little more credit. If done wrong, then the anime's rating will drop heavily for me. The reason is that I want to feel satisfied when an anime series ends. Even if it suggests that the story will continue, the anime should have enough closure to end the season. If I don't feel satisfied with how an anime ends, then it'll leave a bad impression that lingers for a while. I've seen some decent anime where my ratings for them dropped rock bottom because of how they ended.

A good ending IMO was Gundam Wing.

A bad ending is Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai (Wanna be the Strongest in the World).

A good ending needs to wrap up all loose ends and answer all major dramatic questions. Otherwise, I don't consider the anime to be complete and that definitely alters my score. I'll never give an incomplete anime a "legendary" on my review scale. That said, the actual contents of an ending can be subjective. I personally like Erased's ending.
It's understandable just not as satisfying.

It depends. For example I liked Boku dake wa Inal Machi, I thought the ending was a masterpiece. I don't know what people are getting mad about. But endings like Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai abbreviated as 'Oreimo' is the one of worst or the worst anime endings of all time. I 'literally cried' because the ending was so bad. Waste of time, IMO.

Samurai Champloo's ending highlighted why the show wasn't quite worthy of a "perfect" rating (10 at the time, currently 9). If Psycho-Pass' ending had advanced its ideas rather than just being a bunch of stuff happening to the characters, it would have a higher rating. Same for Eureka Seven.

And of course shows like Shokugeki no Soma, No Game No Life, One Punch Man, and Inou Battle would be way better if they had actual endings, instead of "read the source" endings.

i feel like a bad ending isnt such a bad thing, of course it can leave you a bad aftertaste but its part of the series, so even if it drops the rating a bit i can still feel satisfied.
What really make me throw table in the air are open ending... when absolutely nothing is solved but thats it, its over. nothing else... sure sometime the manga isnt over or the series is just getting droped, but not seeing end to a story is the worst :(
