    Let's replace that MOSFET on the next episode of Nuggets, and show Jeem how it's done. You'll require some disassembly of the plastic parts and a hot tray underneath to prewarm the PCB. Just a thought. 73 OM

    Steve, one thing you don't want to do, if you have a battery that is designed to put out 18, or 20 volts, and is made up of a number of cells, which is what you have in your video, taping in to get a voltage in this case, that the radio will work on, is not the way to proceed, because you are unbalanceing the battery pack, some cells will pull down and others will stay fully charged, which will cause problems when charging, the proper way is to drain the battery at its designed capacity and use a converter for the desired output system stays balanced 😊 great to see you tinkering have a fun day, missed you at Quartfest this year, sorry was buzy working on a neighbors solar system, maybe next year, Dave AI7VS

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  8 дней назад +2

      100% Agreed Dave! I'm sure the USB taps are "USB on a chip" and are tapped in properly... I kind of suspect that making the taps is going to work the way you and I think it works... but Dewalt (et al) make these batteries with these taps on them and either they did it right... or not ;-) I'm wondering if these are voltage taps with proper boost/buck or if these are actually BMS taps and the BMS is actually in the separate charger. Ultimately, there are cheaper 8ah batteries for portable radio use.

    • @RobB_VK6ES
      @RobB_VK6ES 8 дней назад

      @@temporarilyoffline So what is it? You stand by your (poor) suggestion to tap various cells or agree with AI7VS. If you are not sure of the purpose of the taps or the charge method used to charge the battery then please do not make speculative content. These batteries are capable of causing great damage (fire risk) when mistreated

    I use 12v2AH Dewalt batteries for my uSDX+ with a simple adapter cable I made up using two crimp on spade connectors that simply jam into the positive and negative terminals on the pack. One battery will last for many hours with that small draw that the little radio has.

  • @clinodev
    @clinodev 8 дней назад

    Ah, poor battery tester, looking forward to the teardown video! Thanks for opening those packs and showing the cells, btw! "Batteries" are quiet, it's voltage regulation that's noisy.
    I'm no audiophile, but with supercapacitors getting cheap now, I've been playing with the idea of one of those setups they use with a battery of lithium cells feeding a capacitor bank, which feeds clean power out. I've seen a few youtube videos on building them, and there are a bunch of supercap power filters on aliexpress. They also have those hybrid capacitor/lithium cells that are supposed to be safer than either, hmm. AHCR-S04R0S as an example on Mouser, 4V nominal 5A continuous, 25A for a little while if you needed it.

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  8 дней назад +1

      100% agree. This battery has the USB boost/buck converter which could have been noisy, and I know a lot of folks use those beefier converters I mentioned in the vid. I'm not ready to pay for one just to prove what they already know though ;-) Re: super caps - have you seen the "car jump start" packs? Its my understand that they are just a bank of charged caps with a high discharge rate. I'm working getting one of those for the ham channel to see if they can power for more than seconds or what.

    I use Milwaukee M12 batteries. Not 13.8, but enough to get me 10W on my KX3, I operate QRP so that is fine. The M12s are pretty reasonable right now. A 12V 3A is about $50. They are very small and light too.

    Nice testing . I don't have that brand yet for DeWalt. I do have Ryobi tools and battery as well as DeWalt tools and battery even 60V MAX flex Volt . They make adapters to go between the 3 brands . Just makes them longer using adapter . DeWalt had a USB C 100 watt PD type C IN and out with USB A battery topper for 20V/60V battery. it is mostly RFI quit. DCB 094 . It is great and will Charge battery from USB C solar panel or a USB A with A to C cord . Just slower. And can charge from 12V with the PD 12/24V lighter plug adapters. 45W and 65W ones and 100 watt PD ones. Just charges slower or faster according what PD input. 5V to 20V PD input to charge. Yes 5V charge works but very slow and takes all day . 20V PD in and full battery in under a hour for 6 AH . Them DC to DC buck converters can be RFI noisy. Type 31 Ferrite on in and out cleans them up somewhat but still some noise may remain . It varies so much brand to brand. 73

    Nothing for Ridgid system. There are so many better options for portable use. It would be interesting to see how long it last during tool use and how many charge cycles it has in it. Let the smoke out of the tester, sounds like a Nuggets episode to fix it.

      99% of the time my tool batteries are doing nothing.
      For a DIYer, calendar aging is going to kill a tool battery more than cycling. So using those cycles is putting that expensive battery to use.
      For the same reason, I use my 100ah 12-volt lifepo4 camper batteries to power my base radio, rather than buying a power supply
